Twitter birdieThanks to Doug from Extraordinary Pet Sitting, our guest blogger this month for explaining how Twitter helps pet sitters stay connected with clients.

Most of our clients like to receive a brief text message once a day while they are at work or on vacation. Some of our clients would prefer not to receive any messages, some would like more than one message and some would prefer an e-mail or no contact at all. Adding to the confusion, we always like to send a message on the very first visit for vacation clients, but who wants an early morning or late night text while on vacation? Throw in the fact that vacation clients are in a wide variety of time zones and you can see where things start to get confusing. Our solution to the problem is that we update all of our visits on Twitter.

Twitter is a free social networking service that lets its users send and receive each others updates. Messages are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to other users - known as followers - who have subscribed to them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.

Most of our clients do not have a Twitter account but we have a page on our website dedicated exclusively to Twitter updates. All our clients need is internet access and they can see how their pets are doing from anywhere in the world. We are still texting our clients as our main form of communication, but in the future we will offer real time Twitter updates with pictures as often as possible. Workday clients will not be interrupted and they can check on their pets during breaks or other convenient times. Vacation clients will not receive messages too early or late with time zone changes and they can check on their pets in San Diego at anytime. Twitter is a great tool for social media and we really like the fact that it improves our services for our clients.
