So everyone is talking about it - social media marketing…so what is it? According to Wikipedia, social media marketing is “an engagement with online communities to generate exposure, opportunity and sales. The No.1 advantage is generating exposure for the business, followed by increasing traffic and building new business partnerships.” Common social media marketing tools include Twitter, Blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube.

So as a petpreneur, what should you do first to expose your company to this social media frenzy?

(1) Pick 2 social media marketing tools and open accounts - Chances are that if you pick more than 2, you might feel a little overwhelmed since they are all different. So which 2 do you pick? I like Twitter and Facebook, but any social media marketing tool should work.

(2) Use the same profile picture for both accounts - Lets say you opened a Facebook account and uploaded your company’s logo as the profile picture. Well, your Facebook friends know you by that picture. Once they see this same profile picture on the 2nd media…lets say Twitter, they will know that is you and would want to follow you.

(3) Customize profile backgrounds to your taste - Twitter and Myspace allow you to be very creative when it comes to your profile backgrounds. You can use your company’s logo, pictures, etc. Facebook is more limited on this, but you can still customize it, just not to the extent that you can with Twitter and Myspace.

These 3 steps are just for you to start setting up your profiles on the social media marketing world. Just to get your foot on the door! And remember, don’t get overwhelmed. Once you get familiar with each tool, it will get easier.
