You already know that I really enjoy reading articles that relate to the betterment of a business - Marketing, Increase Sells and Profits, Customer Service, etc. I read a Strategies article posted in USA today titled Getting your first customer takes work. The article mentions 5 things you can do to get your first customer.

1. Give your product or service away - Let the potential client try your dog treats. If you are an online pet business magazine give the customer a free trial issue.

2. Offer deep discounts - If you are just starting your pet sitting business, give 20% discount to first-time clients.

3. Use community and social networking sites - These sites will help you promote your services, products, discounts, etc. You can’t go wrong with FREE MARKETING!!

4. Ask your competitors for their excess work - Don’t be shy and talk to your competitors. Be sincere, but also smart.

5. Ask your former employer if you can work for them - Not sure if this applies to many pet businesses out there, but if it does…why not.

I’ve seen many pet business start-ups use these techniques and it works. How did you get your first customer? Did you give a special discount? What was your selling pitch? Tell us. We love to hear it!
